How to Align Your Wardrobe with Your Curls

I’m not a style or fashion expert by any stretch. However, I have been consulting with one and figured I’d reshare some of what I learned about dressing as it relates to your type of hair. In my case, having textured or curly hair.

My Style Transformation

For the past few years, I have really wanted to define my style. I didn’t feel as though how I dressed reflected the message I wanted to send with my appearance.

I recently consulted with an Image Styling and Wardrobe Consultant from Modnitsa Atelier. During our consultation, she explained how to build my wardrobe by matching the texture in my hair (and skin but I won’t go into that).

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Ruffles? Heck no! Relax. it’s not about the design pattern. It’s about the texture of the garment. Some textures include:

  • cable knit wool
  • acrylic
  • polar fleece
  • chiffon
  • velvet
  • lace
  • taffeta

Unless you’re into ruffles, they don’t have to be an option. Whew!

Since my style is two-sided (Traditional Elegant +  Sporty Elegant) due to clothing styles varying on the weekend, I have to build my wardrobe around pieces that are hormonious while still taking into account my curly hair. That’s not to say I won’t have smooth pieces that would flatter someone with straight hair. There will be times when I will wear my hair up in a smooth style so will need clothing that works for that look as well.

Texture + Curls = Style !

My stylist and I will be scheduling a date in the coming months to go shopping to further build my wardrobe. In the interim I have purchased a few basic pieces and started pairing up existing pieces to match my new style.

The texture of the clothing flows with the texture of the hair. So, for someone with super curly hair like me looks best in clothes that are textured (NOTE: the garment can be a solid color). Since I don’t have much texture in my skin, my clothes can be moderately textured.

Defining Your Style

There’s really no hard and fast rules that you “must” follow when it comes to dressing. Sure, people will judge you on what you wear but they will judge you for what you don’t wear down to the labels on your clothes.

There are guidelines to help you make a specific style statement (if that’s what you’re looking to do) or kick your style up a notch but what really matters is how good YOU feel in YOUR clothes. When it comes to style, you have to define your own.

Dressing in a manner that mirrors your curly hair (or is it the other way around!), simply helps to highlight the beauty of your hair.

Curly girls rock! (did I just say rock?)
