Living in NY & What I’ve Learned About Social Distancing

This 2020 pandemic has hit us all very hard. I never thought I’d experience anything worst than 9/11 but this is definitely it. On top of how difficult it is social distancing in New York, it makes you wonder if we’ll ever get back to normal.

experiences social distancing in new york

From commuting to attending social events (although I didn’t do much of that), life as we know it has changed. Especially in NYC.

I work in NYC and live just outside of it. The need for social distancing in New York, while real is also not easy.

If you live in the country or a rural area, distancing yourself from others is super easy for you to do. It’s more difficult for those of us who live or work in a big city.  What I’m about to share are things I’ve noticed about social distancing and being forced to stay isolated as much as possible. Live vicariously through me 😉

Manners Abound Social Distancing NY

My fellow NYers have never been so polite! Seriously, when I have to run to the grocery store, folks are all about “excuse me” “pardon me”. Many are serious about not getting the virus.

For those of you living under a rock at a vacant end of the earth (Is that even possible?), I’m referring to COVID-19 aka the Coronavirus. Actually COVID-19 is what causes the Novel Coronavirus.

Idiots Exist

Then, there are those who are as dumb as dirt and not taking this thing seriously. These are the people who are going out like nothing is going on in the world. Hanging out on street corners in packs – all up in each others faces…and without a mask.

Well, the Governor of NY is certainly not playing. And, that brings me to the next realization.

Why Isn’t Cuomo a Presidential Candidate?

Governor Cuomo is tough and he’s no joke. He could care less what President Trump is saying when it’s not aligned with health authorities. Cuomo is looking out for NYers. Our Governor is doing everything possible to save lives, including making a demand for life saving equipment like respirators from the powers that be.

He is the epitome of a leader and he’s also shown himself to really care for people. You can tell that this isn’t just political for him. So, that makes me wonder why he’s not running for president. I’d certainly vote for him.

OK this is not necessarily about social distancing but still a great learning.

Social Distancing in NY Hasn’t Changed Much

The next thing I learned about social distancing in New York is more about myself. I’ve been doing this all along (mostly anyway)!

For the exception of not going to work, I typically stay to myself. I’m a homebody for sure. When I do go out, I try to tune out the rest of the world and I’m real funny about people getting all up in my personal space.

Trader Joe’s is Awesome

Yes, I like Trader Joe’s food but this is about social distancing and about operating business differently during this crisis. They have been rocking it:

– Special shopping time for seniors only
– Only allowing a limited number of people in the store at a time
– Posting bright blue tape every 6 feet so customers know just exactly how far apart people should stay from one another (and if they see you violating, they will gently remind you)
– Spraying each person’s hands with hand sanitizer when they come in and leave the store

Relationships Aint Easy

Last off, what I learned about social distancing living in NY is that I have never appreciated such down time in all my life. Yes, I’m a little bored and yes my husband has got on my nerves more times than I can count. But, I love being able to spend time with my family. I have a deeper appreciation for simply having a lovely home that the good Lord provided for me.

I pray this coronavirus pandemic ceases soon, once and for all. Not because I don’t like social distancing. No, I actually love it. In fact, when it’s all said and done I’m still gonna need folks to still honor that six feet!

Personal space and all.

The reason I want this thing over with is I care for humankind and aside from wanting people to get well, I truly care about the people who are literally losing their minds and freaking out, losing their peace.

The reason I’m not? I trust God and I know He covers those who trust in Him. I’m not saying those who got sick don’t trust Him. I have no idea of knowing what others think, feel or believe.

I just know that I plead the Blood of the Lord Jesus over myself and my family every day and God has been faithful. We abide in God’s secret place (Psalm 91).

This has been my experience during the pandemic and while some are still not social distancing in New York, many are. Your experience may have been different. If you’d like to share it or talk about it, leave a comment below.

I hope you are safe and healthy In Jesus Name.
