Just because you are mom, doesn’t mean you can’t rock cute hairstyles! What it does mean is, you need easy hairstyles you can do that last a long time and don’t take much time to do. So, below you will find some mom hair styles that can be done on medium length to long hair.

I’m a mom of three, one of who is a special needs young man. To say that I am one of the most busy moms you can meet is probably an understatement. Yet, my natural hair is important to me. That’s why I put forth effort into styling my hair. I also have a go-to hairstyle for when I’m super busy but more on that later.

Since I’m a black mom, I share hairstyles that women like me would do. However, you can still do these styles even if you aren’t a woman of color with a curly or coily hair type.

If you have straight hair, I’ll bet you can do every single one of these mom hairstyles! And, you’ll love them too.

7 Easy Mom Friendly Hairstyles

Up until I was in my mid-30s, I’d rock hairstyles that many would think were too childish. You know the styles:

  • space buns
  • double pigtails
  • and even cornrows that clearly look better on children.

Now, that I’m in my 50s, I’ve “turned” down my hairstyles a bit but not fully! I still like to do hairstyles that I think frame my face well. Sometimes, that’s two cornrows going straight back and secured with a hair tie on each braid. At other times, it’s the styles you’ll soon discover.

Below are 7 hairstyles that I’ve repeatedly done on my fine hair. These include:

  • the high bun (which is also sometimes a high ponytail turned messy bun)
  • a low bun with a side part and large flat twists
  • high puff done on my curly hair
  • what I like to call a mom bun done with twists
  • and more…

When I was writing this article, I was thinking about how funny it is that people categorize hairstyles as “mom hair.” It’s hair!

But I get it, some styles may be considered age-inappropriate after a certain age when a woman may be a mom.

If you have short hair, you can likely do a version of the style pictured with curly hair. Another option is to add some extensions, hair clip pieces, or even a half wig.

Don’t forget to pin your favorite styles for future reference!

Curly Ponytail with a Scarf

effortless curly ponytail hairstyle

This pony tail hairstyle is a perfect ponytail hairstyle. It’s also a basic, classic, and curly ponytail pulled back with the front tied down with a scarf.

There are many ways to tie the scarf that smoothes your edges – something we black women love to do. Especially, those of us who proudly embrace our natural hair texture.

You can do this as a low ponytail shown or you can raise it up to be more of a high ponytail. If you haven’t figured it out by now, the star of the show is the scarf!

Now, the word “perfect” is definitely subjective. The reason I consider this a perfect ponytail hairstyle is twofold:

  • It’s an effortless style
  • It takes less time to create “clean” looking edges with this style than with a regular ponytail

This way of styling a ponytail is also great for bad hair days.

Soft Waves

This next style is my favorite to do when I straighten my hair. I used this hair tool to achieve the look. It’s a heatless style that’s just so easy to do and it’s ok if the curls drop. In fact, it’s preferred.

Some women with straight hair use those sea salt sprays to get this look. When you have natural hair that’s been straightened, you don’t want to add any product that will cause your hair to revert – not even a little bit.

Twisted High Bun

This “mom hairstyle” requires a little time investment up front but it takes very little time to maintain it and the style lasts for a long time.

Start by doing small twists (mini twists are an option too but for the sake of time, keep them smaller).

Twist on dry, stretched hair, not wet hair. If you twist on wet hair, you risk increased tangling when it’s time to remove the twists.

What I like most about these twists pulled up into a bun is how neat it keeps the hair looking. Plus, since the ends are neatly tucked away, the style helps you retain moisture for a much longer period of time.

If you have longer hair, you can manipulate the twists into a bun that will look even more beautiful.

Crown Twist

This beautiful single flat twist goes all around the head. It meets the other side and you use bobby pins to secure the end of the twist into the larger section.

This is definitely a hairstyle that’s best done on blown-out or straightened hair. When you eliminate most of your natural curl pattern, the look is more polished.

When done on straight hair, it becomes more of an elegant updo.

High Curly Hair Puff

When you don’t want to mess with your curly hair, this is a super easy hairstyle. Plus, you get extra volume if your curls are fine.

This hairstyle will be a fave for a new mom who has a lot on her plate and doesn’t want to mess with her hair.

To do this style, all you need is a seamless elastic or a satin scrunchie. To make it more secure (also, giving a slightly new look), you can use an old school banana clip.

Use a narrow scarf to tie down the front and be on your way!

Top Knot Bun

The top knot bun didn’t just make this line up of mom hair styles for no reason. It’s a common style and a go-to for so many women – especially black women with natural hair. It is similar to the high twisted bun but done with loose strands instead of twists.

Simply gather all of your hair. Then, make sure it’s pulled up to the top of your head and secured.

How you secure your hair in a bun is entirely up to you. Just make sure to secure it in a way that the bun can last until the next day. Don’t go too far beyond a day. You don’t want to cause hair breakage in the crown area.

Using a hair elastic that is firmly secured (but not too tight) and not easily loosened, will make the style last that extra day.

For a bun that appears larger and more voluminous, mold the bun into place and pin it in sections versus pulling all of the hair through to create the bun.

Side Braid Into a Bun

This is the perfect hairstyle for moms with medium length natural hair. I say it’s an effortless look because it’s so darn cute! However, you do have to know how to braid and it requires some effort to pump that braid up. BUT… it’s worth it.

I used this volumizing powder by Schwarzkopf to give my braid more oomph.

By adding some pearl pins or a pretty hair comb, this cute and easy hairstyle could rival some of the bride hairstyles you see.

Here’s a video showing how I did this style using the volumizing powder:

Every Day Hairstyles

While some of the hairstyles shown above can be done on natural hair for special occasions, they are predominantly meant for everyday wear.

Notice none of these styles use a hair tie or other hair accessories (other than a scarf and bobby pins). That’s because, for us moms, we don’t typically do all of that unless it’s for special occasions.

The last thing I want to share is that you should not let your age or status as a parent determine how you style your hair. If you like to do little girl hairstyles, who’s gonna stop you?

God made you to feel comfortable in the skin you are in.  If there’s a particular hairstyle that wouldn’t be considered by the masses as a mom hair style, so what?

Do what you like and what makes you feel comfortable & confident.

Also, try to make sure that for everyday styling you mainly stick with styles that help add extra minutes to your day. Because we certainly don’t have hours to regularly commit to styling our hair!
