Today we’ll look at some uncommon ways to give yourself some post-holiday care. Let’s jump in…
Seasonal Food Detox
Christmas is a time when most of us overindulge in food. Or is that just me? Nah it’s not.
After all of that indulging, take some time to explore gentle seasonal detox methods, like creating a DIY herbal tea blend with winter herbs (such as ginger and cinnamon) to cleanse your system naturally.
Other ways to do a food detox cleanse include:
- Ingest detoxifying foods: Include garlic, lemon, beets, and leafy greens in your meals
- Replace alcohol and caffeine with herbal tea and water infused with lemon
- Do a season of intermittent fasting to give your gut a rest.
- Avoid processed foods and cook as close to nature as possible
DIY Candle Making for Meditating
Create your own candles infused with calming essential oil blends like lavender and eucalyptus.
Here are a few easy DIY candlemaking tutorials I’ve found:

If you love candles like I do and don’t mind much fragrance, Yankee Candle has a Macintosh apple scented candle that’s heavenly. Get it from Yankee Candle directly though. I don’t know what’s up with resellers. The scent isn’t as good or potent.
Use DIY candles for a sensory experience while praying or meditating. Focus on deep breathing and reflecting as the candle flickers.
This is definitely an out-of-the-box way to get in some after-Christmas self-care.
Post-Holiday Digital Detox
Christmas is a wonderful time of year but it can also be stressful if you take on too much. It can also be stressful if you focus too much on what other people are doing.
Oftentimes, we tend to share our lives during Christmas on social media. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it can also send you down a rabbit hole of looking at other people’s lives. Then, comparing your own life – what it’s lacking or missing.
Instead, set aside a few days or a weekend where you completely unplug from social media, emails, and the online world.
Use this time to reconnect with God and yourself through activities like reading, painting, praying, or simply resting.
Cold Water Therapy
Now, this one is unique but it can truly cause your body to be refreshed.
To do cold water therapy all you need to do is either take a brisk cold shower or a cold plunge in a tub.
The tub plunge is brutal in my opinion so I opt for the cold shower where you can introduce parts of your body to the cold water a bit at a time.
Cold water therapy can help reduce inflammation and stimulate blood flow, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized. This is just what you need after a busy holiday season.
Post-Holiday Scent Rejuvenation
Refresh your living space with new, non-holiday scents, such as citrus, rosemary, or mint.
This is similar to the DIY candlemaking but if you’re like me, who has time for it? It’s a great way to get in some self love when you have time. However, it’s not the only way.
Swap out Christmas fragrances to help create a new atmosphere that feels light and uplifting.
Some tools to use to get more scent into your life include:
- scented candles
- diffusing essential oils
- aromatherapy roll-ons
- scented pillow and room sprays
- sachets and potpourri
- bath salts and oils
- scented lotions and creams
- aromatic teas
Choose one or all of the ideas shared above for after Christmas self care. Do what resonates with you most. The point is to prioritize it by doing something.
