My Decision to Go Natural
Over 25 years ago, I made the decision to go natural. Back then it wasnโt popular. There werenโt shelves full of curl creams or endless tutorials online. I didnโt even fully know how to take care for my natural hair – my fine natural hair. But I knew that continuing to relax my hair with harmful chemicals wasn’t the answer.
I also know that God doesn’t make mistakes in the way He designs His creation – including our hair.
It took me years to discover what my hair liked and didnโt like. There was plenty of trial and error, too; like the time I bought that expensive jar of Miss Jessieโs Pillow Soft Curls, used it on my transitioning hair, and ended up with a stringy mess!
But over time I learned how to style my hair – yet not just style it. I learned how to embrace it with all of its finickiness. Learn how to re-embrace your natural hair journey.

And honestly, the trials and errors were part of the process. Every failed twist out, every product that didnโt work, every moment of frustration was teaching me something. About my hair. About patience. About grace.
Your Hair Is a Part of Godโs Masterpiece
The Bible says, “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.” That includes every part of you (See Psalm 139:14). Every curl pattern, every strand, every texture is intentional.
For so long, we were taught to hide or fix our natural texture. But there is nothing broken about what God designed.
Embracing your natural hair is part of embracing your whole self. When you stop fighting your reflection and start seeing it through Godโs eyes, that is when true freedom AND transformation begins.
Renew Your Mind, Not Just Your Routines
There is more to this than finding the right products. The real work happens in your mind.
Romans 12:2 tells us, โDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.โ
Going natural can bring up old insecurities. It may cause you to fear how others will perceive you or even create doubts about your beauty.
But God is inviting you to believe what He says about you. You are already beautiful and you are more than enough.
Yes, you need to learn how to properly care for your natural hair but let this journey be part of how you retrain your thoughts and rewrite your inner narrative.
Do Not Rush the Process. Trust the Lord.
Nailing your natural hair journey takes time, and that is a good thing. Some wash days will test your patience. Some styles won’t work (hellooooo fine natural hair!) Some products may even leave you wondering why you even tried.
But all of it is part of the process. And God works through process.
Just like our faith grows over time, so does our understanding of what we need, what works, and how to care for ourselves both inside and out.
Give yourself permission to learn, to make mistakes, and to try again. That is where the beauty happens.

Invite God into Your Journey
Yes, even your hair journey can be part of your spiritual walk on this side of heaven..
While your natural hair is not who you are, it’s part of who you are, which can be closely tied to your identity. So talk to God about it. Pray over your frustrations, your insecurities, your desire to see yourself through His eyes.
Here’s a Devotional Journal: Love Your Hair in 30 Days to help you through it all. This devotional journal will take you on an exploratory walk through the scriptures that will lead you to a destination of intentional self love in a non-selfish way.

Build a Community That Builds You

You do not have to do this alone.
There are women all over the world walking the path of caring for their naturally coily and curly hair. They are embracing their hair, reclaiming their beauty, and learning along the way.
So, I encourage you to surround yourself with voices that speak life, not shame. Follow people who encourage you, not compare you or cause you to feel less than.
And don’t forget. You can be that encouragement for someone else, too. Share your journey, your lessons, your triumphs, and your failures.
A Final Word of Encouragement
I believe the journey of transitioning to natural hair is a sacred one. It is not just about seeing your natural curls come through. It’s also about building your confidence and embracing who you were created to be.
It is about knowing who you are and whose you are, and letting that truth shine through from root to tip.
Walk into this season with your “crown” held high – not just by your curls, but by the confidence of a woman who knows God made her on purpose.
