25 Easy Sumer Hairstyles for Fine Hair
Last updated on March 26th, 2025 at 09:36 pm
Styling natural hair in the summer doesn’t have to be challenging. The natural hair summer styles you’ll soon discover are ideal for fine hair because they highlight its softness while creating the illusion of added volume with minimal effort. However, you can do these hairstyles on any natural hair type.

Usually, when you read articles that share different hairstyles, the styles are not unique to one individual. They are usually a collection of hairstyles from across the internet. Not so in this case! Each of these styles was done on my own fine natural hair.
Natural Hair Ponytail Styles

1. The Bubble Ponytail

Starting with this pretty ponytail, the bubble ponytail is super easy to do and is one of the best ponytail hairstyles for black when to wear their hair down but keep it away from the face.
This can be done on natural hair textures or straight hair. I like to do my bubble ponytails on my curly hair when I’m short on time.
When I have a bit more time, I’ll blow it out so that the length of my hair is more apparent, making this one of my favorite hairstyles.
2. High Ponytail w/ a Top Bun

This style is really easy and cute if I don’t say so myself.
Simply, section out the top and secure into a ponytail with the hair pulled half way through to create a loose bun. Then, gather the rest of the hair into as a high a ponytail as you can get it.
To eliminate that obvious division between the bun and the ponytail, use a small decorative clip to join the two in the center.
Low Tension Natural Hairstyles

In this section you’ll find easy natural hairstyles that work well for type 4 natural hair. These low tension hairstyles are all done with twists which once set can last for many days.
3. Pulled Back Twists on Natural Hair Texture

This is a nice summer hairstyle for natural hair when you want to recover a wash and go that’s on its last leg.
4. Large pinned flat twists

When you want to be a bit more protective, this hairstyle fits the bill. It’s great for summer
5. Loose twists

These twists can be done very quickly because you are twisting them loosely. Also, they should be done on stretched natural hair to reduce tangling and maintain your beautiful black hair that some people long for.
The reason this makes a great style is these twists can be used to create other casual hairstyles that can be worn to summer events like BBQs and outdoor sporting events.
Braided Styles
6. Fishtail Braid

While the fishtail braid can be done any season of the year, it’s a great style for summer. It also gives you that boho look that just works for the warmer weather.
To create it, use small sections of hair to make the braid. The neater you do it, the more elegant. The messier, the more effortless and fun it looks.
This look is intricate but it’s not that difficult to do. It can be done medium length hair but the longer the hair the better because you are able to really see that “fishtail.”
Here’s a great tutorial (done on straight hair but it’s the best explanation that I’ve found. plus, when you do a fishtail braid, it looks best on straightened hair)
7. Crown Braid

There are a few ways to do a crown braid. You can create two small braids from each side of your head and pin them across the crown like a headband.
Or, you can do something like what I’ve done here (better for fine hair to appear fuller) which is to use all of the hair braided from one side to the other to create a braid across the “crown” section of hair.
You can secure the rest of the hair in a braid or a bun like what I’ve done or even, tuck the end of the braid into itself. Either way, you can’t go wrong because your hair will be off your neck – a win against the hot weather.
8. Accent Braid

Braid a small section on one side and leave the rest of your hair loose. Give it more interest by adding some hair cuffs and a clip.
While this style doesn’t get your hair up off your neck, it’s cute for a fun day out.
Summer Protective Styles & Natural Hair Bun Styles

As the warm weather approaches, you may be tempted to wear your hair out more often. Yet, it’s good to strike a balance between wearing the hair out and doing protective updos for natural hair.
In this section, you’ll find easy protective styles for black women. I have mostly type 4 natural hair and recommend each style to be worn as shown or lifted to create a natural hair updo for work or play.
9. Roll, Tuck & Pin

This hairstyle is a very easy way to put your natural hair up out of your face. Just grab your hair starting at the front, rool back, tuck it and pin it.
10. Fishtail Bun

And, just like that you can transform a fishtail braid into a bun to make it a summer protective style.
11. Low Chignon

This is a super effortless summer hairstyle that you can do in a cinch.
Buns of any kind are great but they make for especially great summer protective styles for natural hair. You can do them on straightened hair or hair in its natural state. Very rarely will I straighten my hair in the summer like a silk press but I will blow it out.
12. Twisted Bun

To create this style, gather your hair into a low bun, and depending on your density, create twists with medium size sections.
Since my hair is pretty straight here, I was only able to create two twists before pinning them into a bun. When my hair is in its curly state, I can create 4 or 5 twists.
In the summer, this is more likely to be done on blown-out hair but you can do it on old twist out or braid out.
13. Double Puffs

Part your hair in the middle or on the side and create two puffs for a playful, youthful looking natural hairstyle.
14. Low Messy Bun

Gather your hair at the nape. Messily twist it into a bun, and secure it with bobby pins for a casual style.

15. Half-Up, Half-Down

This is a style that can be done on curly or straight hair. I definitely prefer it on my curly hair. The curly top bun is secured with a loose satin scrunchie. The base of this style photographed is the wash and go.
16. Claw Clipped Twists

If you wear twists every day, an easy way to make them summer friendly is to pull them up off your neck and clip them up with a claw clip.
17. Wash & Go

The wash and go is the classic summer hairstyle. Summer is literally called “wash and go season” in the natural hair community.
18. Low Effort Side Swept Style

Sweep hair to one side, fold the ends up and secure with a decorative clip. No bobby pins or hair ties needed. This is super easy and fast.
19. Messy Top Knot

Gather your hair into a high bun, tussle it lightly for volume, and let a few strands do whatever they want to do.
20. Messy Clipped Buns

This is as simple as it looks. The only thing holding those messy buns together are the decorative clips. This is also a fun protective style for summer.
21. High Bun Style

This is a converted style. It’s a variation of the high bun with the clipped ponytail. The bottom section that was in a ponytail was pulled up, wrapped around the top bun, and clipped in place.

22. Tuck-and-Roll Headband

Place a headband over your hair and start by tucking small sections into it, a little at a time until all hair is tucked. You can also leave a front piece out like I’ve done here for a soft, vintage-inspired style.
23. Zig-Zag Parting

Add interest to any hairstyle by creating a zig-zag part and styling the rest of your hair however you desire.
Admittedly my parting could have been a bit cleaner but I usually reserve perfect parting for the sections of my hair people can actually see! The top, not so much.
24. Hair Scarf Tie

Tie a colorful scarf around a ponytail or bun for a stylish accessory that enhances the look of a normally boring looking bun or ponytail.
25. Beachy Waves

Beachy waves are beautiful and are the perfect style to rock in summer when you want your hair to be a bit more than casual. It’s also great date night hair.
Beachy wave hairstyles can be done with a flat iron, curling iron or with a heatless curling rod like this one.
Natural Hair Summer Styles for Fine Hair
These 25 hairstyles are perfect for thin hair or fine hair in the summer because they don’t require excessive volume or thickness to achieve an everyday or fun, breezy look.
The styles with twists, braids, and low buns, work with the natural texture and density of fine hair, making them easy to style without damage.
Additionally, minimal tools and hair products are required to set these styles. This allows you to create flattering looks quickly and with little effort.
