Jeremiah 29:11

Here at Fine Natural Hair and Faith, I share on the subject of hair and faith. Much of the faith-based content I share can also be applied to your hair and self-care routines because these are a part of your life as well. Today, let’s delve into Jeremiah 29:11 and how you can make it your personal confession or your favor confession!

My History with Jeremiah 29:11

I’ve considered Jeremiah 29:11 my personal letter from God for many years now. Yes, the entire Bible is a letter to the church but this Bible verse has such special meaning to me.

Whenever I feel down or less than or discouraged, God always finds a way to put this very verse before me. It’s happened countless times:

  • Sitting watching a sermon and the verse is read aloud
  • Shopping (at the Dollar Tree oddly) and seeing a notebook with that verse on it
  • Speaking to someone about something that I felt badly about and being encouraged by the verse

If nothing else, I believe Jeremiah 29:11 has been etched onto my life. I realize that it has to be embraced and I want to share with you how to do that through the power of confession.

The Power of Confessing God’s Word

When you make a personal confession of faith in God’s Word, you are essentially speaking God’s truth into your life with expectation. And, there’s not only power in your words. There’s power in expecting what God says will come to pass.

You can confess Jeremiah 29:11 over every situation in your life. We’ll go deeper later in the article but at a high level, it can be used for:

  • Financial declarations
  • To enforce Biblical financial principles
  • Solidifying your Identity in Christ
  • Fueling your prayer life
  • and more…

The more you confess the Word of God, the more you will begin to internalize it. The more you internalize, the more your mindset will shift to align with God’s will for your life.

Confessing God’s Word will strengthen your faith, change your mindset, and help you overcome all fear or doubt.

It’s not just enough to read the Word or listen to it. When you speak it, you agree with it.

Now let’s look at the historical context of Jeremiah 29:11 and how you can form a daily confession from it for your life. I love this verse because it offers us God’s promise of hope in spite of difficult circumstances.

Historical Context of Jeremiah 29:11

At the time of the writing of the book of Jeremiah, God was speaking to the Israelites after they had been exiled to Babylon.

God had called the people of Israel to repent but they still began worshipping idols. They were deceived by the false prophets of that day. However, a true prophet, Jeremiah came along and proclaimed God’s love to them while reminding them of His plans for their future. This was in spite of the judgment that was to come through the Babylonians.

God’s promises weren’t limited by the Israelite’s disobedience or the difficult situation they found theirselves in.

What It Means to Have and Make Personal Confessions

Whenever you decide to take a verse of scripture – something that is based on truth, and make it a confession, you are personalizing God’s Word for your life.

We can be taught God’s Word and read it but it doesn’t begin to change us until we make it personal.

In the case of Jeremiah 29:11, we can mentally assent that it’s God’s will to give us a good future with hope. However, when we claim that promise for ourselves and not look at it as a general promise for all, that’s when we can truly experience the power of God’s promises for our lives.

Breaking Down Jeremiah 29:11 for Personal Application

Now let’s break this verse down and milk it so we can make its application personal.

I was taught how to study scripture with a technique called verse mapping using the James Method. Part of the method is to use an app like the Bible Hub to look up the original meaning of the word. There’s more to the James Method than that but let’s focus on just the meaning of the words and their Strong’s concordance references.

We’ll use the NASB version of Jeremiah 29:11 for this exercise:

“For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.”

Choosing the keywords from this verse, here are the definitions that appear from either the lexicon in the Bible Hub app along with their Strongs #s or the 1828 Bible dictionary app:

Know (S3045): To observe, fully perceive, discern, recognize

Plans (S4284): thought, purpose to be established

Declares (S5002): Utterance; Emission from the mouth

Welfare (S7965): Completeness, Soundness – Peace with God, especially in covenant relation

Calamity (S7463a): Any great misfortune or cause of misery/distress; generally applied to events or disasters that produce extensive evils

Future (S319): latter part or actual close of time; a happy close of life, suggesting sometimes the idea of a posterity, promised to the righteous

Hope (S8615b): Expectation; outcome, the hoped-for future

Benefit of Breaking Down the Word

When you take the time to break down a verse of scripture in this way, you begin to see things more deeply.

Jeremiah 29:11 expounded is God’s declaration that He perceives and recognizes that His purpose to be established for us to have peace with Him in a covenant relationship is an emission from His very mouth. (and we know God is not a man that He should lie – Numbers 23:19).

That emission, that purpose is for us not to have great misfortune or distress produced by evil. His purpose for us is to have an expected happy close of life.

How Jeremiah 29:11 Frames Your Belief

Now, when breaking down this scripture one clause at a time, we can see how it can frame our belief system for the positive.

“For I know the plans I have for you”: When we believe that God has good plans for our lives, we can release control to Him and trust in His perfect timing and wisdom for our lives.

To make this a personal confession, you could say something like:

God knows the perfect plan for my life, and I trust His guidance.

“Plans to prosper you and not to harm you”:

God’s intentions are for our good, even when our circumstances don’t appear to align with our desires. This is where trust comes in. God is telling us that we can trust Him.

To make this a personal confession, you could say something like:

God’s plans are always for my good, and I trust Him to protect me.

“Plans to give you hope and a future”:

To make this a personal confession, you could say something like:

God is control of my destiny. So, I have a future filled with hope.
