Hey, girl. Hey, it’s been a while. I know since I have published an episode here on the Fine Natural Hair and Faith podcast, but I am ready to get back to it.

It’s taken me some time to focus on what my priorities should be in the business, and I realized that being able to sit down and candidly talk about certain hair care issues and living a life of faith needs to be prioritized.

Yes, I am still writing articles, but there’s really something special about being able to pour out my heart and thoughts to you on subject matters that I truly believe God has given me to talk about.

So hey, friend. Welcome to the Find Natural Hair and Faith podcast. I’m Michelle Smith, your self-professed natural hair coach. I’m a Christian, wife, and mom of a special needs young man.

I have naturally fragile and very fine strands, which I’ve managed to grow to near waist length, caring for my fine natural hair on my own. I share easy to follow tips and strategies that will help you to grow healthier and if it’s your goal, longer hair while sprinkling a bit of my faith into the mix.

Because I believe that when you are experiencing challenges with your natural hair, you can follow all the tips and tricks, but it is the creator of our hair, God almighty, who is the perfect one to show us exactly what we need to do to reach the hair goals we desire.

He will guide you to the right tip or resource for your hair, just as he would in any other area of your life.

By the way, we’re going to start numbering these episodes. So today is episode number three, and in today’s episode, it’s going to be a pretty quick one, but I want to share three natural hair mistakes that have probably been made by all of us.

And you know, when I say mistakes, these are actually really mistakes. It’s not a matter of, oh, you should do something a different way than someone else. These are true mistakes, but I want to show you how you can turn these actual mistakes into a win.

Now, the first mistake is neglecting your hair. Yes, that is a mistake. If you have any hair goals, even if you don’t have any set hair goals, but the one hair goal that we all should have is to have a healthy head of hair.

And honestly, if you’re not giving your hair the attention that it needs, you’re neglecting it. If you don’t have, you know, set wash day or a set time where you can reset your hair for the week, month, or however often you choose to care for your hair, it’s neglect.

Neglect can take so many forms from neglecting to wash it, neglecting to moisturize it, neglecting to strengthen it, neglecting to protect it.

So how can we turn this around into a win? Well, it’s really simple. Your hair has the ability to truly bounce back. Now, that may mean that you might need to get a little trim or maybe even a cut if you’ve neglected your hair for a long time.

But the good news is unless you have health issues, which I hope you don’t, hair grows. Hair grows back and it can grow back healthier than ever before. So my suggestion to you would be to sit down and come up with a plan for your hair care.

Decide when you’re going to wash it, how often you need to moisturize. Your porosity levels should determine how often you need to moisturize your hair. So if you have high porosity hair, you may need to moisturize.

No. There’s no may need about it. You will need to moisturize your hair much more often because your hair tends to lose moisture faster than someone with low porosity hair who will need to moisturize less often.

So you have to first figure out what your porosity is and determine the steps that you need to take to show yourself your hair some love.

Collecting your hair is really not going to be good if you want to maintain a healthy head of hair for any amount of time. So let’s turn this around, establish a hair regimen. It doesn’t have to be long and tedious and difficult.

It can be as simple as wash, deep condition, once a week, once every two weeks. It could be make sure you do a protein treatment once a month, maybe once every other month. The point is to do something and do it consistently.

Make a decision starting today that you will not neglect your hair. Just like you wouldn’t neglect your body and your skin by not taking a shower for days on end, you don’t want to neglect your hair either.

Now, the second mistake, and this is truly a mistake, it’s falling prey to coveting what another person’s head of hair is, what it looks like, wishing that you had what they had, maybe even feeling a little bit jealous.

You know, I can’t say that I’ve not been there, but here’s the thing, ladies. When we covet what another person has, first of all, we are standing against God, but also we are doing ourselves a disservice. So let’s flip this around.

Instead of focusing on what somebody else has, let’s focus on what we have and what we can do to make what we have better. That may mean finding a go-to hairstyle that you know you love for your hair, making it a go-to style, maybe one or two different hairstyles that you can can do to make you feel confident. Also, focusing on your regimen and your routines.

This is very much tied to point number one of neglecting your hair. When you’re focusing on not neglecting your hair and you’re focusing on your regimen, you will not have time to covet what somebody else has.

Like, let’s face it, you really won’t, because you’ll be focused on what you need to take care of your own head of hair.

So let’s turn this around. Instead of coveting what someone else has, be thankful for what you have. That doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate another lady’s head of hair.

You can maybe even aspire to have hair that is healthy like hers, but it won’t be exactly like hers, and that is okay.

Now, the last thing I want to say that is truly a mistake is trying to do hairstyles that don’t necessarily suit us.

Here’s where I’m going to make this personal, and I’m going to actually share a little story with you.

I would watch thick hair naturals like Naptural85 on YouTube do these beautiful, full twist outs. I mean, hair is so voluminous, and I would attempt to do the exact same style the exact same way only to end up in disappointment, because my hair isn’t as full. My hair is long, but it is not as dense, so I’m not going to get the same results.

And guess what? That’s okay, because I have since found hairstyles, excuse me, hairstyles that suit me, that suit my hair, and I think we all have hairstyles that can suit us individually and personally.

So, let’s flip that around. Instead of focusing on doing hairstyles that we see people with hair that’s nothing like us, nothing like what we have, trying to do what they do, let’s figure out hairstyles that we can do that will truly, truly suit us, that will look best on us, and that we can appreciate.

Now, I know there are more than three mistakes you could be making with your hair care, but these are three that come to mind that I think we should really focus on because any other mistake that you make can be directly tied to any of these three.

If you are not seeing results with your hair care, a lot of it could be because you’re either neglecting it, you’re coveting what somebody else has, or you’re doing hairstyles or following hair routines that don’t necessarily suit you.

So, that’s it for today, but girl, you lasted to the end. I’m glad that you did, and even though I’m going to catch you in the next episode, I want to make sure I help set you up for a bit of success.

If you check the show notes, you will find an additional resource where you will be able to learn how to love your natural hair as God gave it to you, and in fact, you’ll discover what God has to say about the hair that you have as well. Thanks for listening, many blessings.
