Braided Hairstyles for Fine Natural Hair That Look Good in the Heat

Braided hairstyles are absolutely beautiful on natural hair. There’s a structural elegance to them that works beautifully with textured hair, adding detail and dimension without much effort. You can keep them polished and neat or wear them with a little looseness, and they still look like you put thought into it, even on the days you didn’t.
The summer braid hairstyles below are ones I’ve actually done on my own fine natural hair. None of them require added hair or complicated techniques, which is exactly the point. Simple doesn’t mean boring, though, and if you want to take any of these up a notch, the right accessories can do that for you.
Bohemian Braids for Summer
If there’s a summer braided hairstyle that never gets old, it’s boho braids. The combination of braids and loose curls gives this style a soft, relaxed feel that also travels well. Think vacation hair that actually holds up.

A lot of people add braiding hair for more fullness, but I’ve always preferred working with what I have. Your own hair has a natural texture that braiding hair can’t quite replicate, and boho braids lean into that beautifully. This style isn’t a quick one, but it can last for several weeks. The longer your hair, the more time you’ll want to set aside.
Side Braided Bun with Curly Bangs
Think of this summer braided style as a close cousin to the crown braid with a side bun. Same foundation, but with curly side bangs framing the front. That one small addition changes the whole feel of the style.

The Classic Fishtail Braid
Fishtail braids look far more complicated than they actually are, which makes them one of my favorite styles to recommend. The woven detail is eye-catching and there are plenty of YouTube tutorials that walk you through the technique clearly.

Braid in a more snug fashion for something more structured or let it go a little loose for that summer boho vibe.
Easy Braided Bun Updo

This braid style is as straightforward as it gets. Gather your hair into a mid-height loose ponytail whether your hair is blown out or in its natural curl pattern, then create one or two braids with the length, loop them under, and pin. Done.
Crown Braid with a Side Bun
This updo was specifically designed with fine hair in mind.

The braiding technique I used creates the illusion of fullness without adding any bulk, which is always the goal with fine strands. The placement of the braid adds dimension, and the product I used gave the braid even more body.
The Looped Bun Braid
This hairstyle starts as a low ponytail done on my fine natural hair. From there, the length of the pony is split into two braids and looped through the center at the base. The looped detail keeps the style interesting while still showing off the length of your hair. It’s an easy way to wear braids without it looking like a standard ponytail braid.

Want to make it more protective? Roll those braids under and pin them up instead. You can also swap the braids for twists if that works better for your hair.
Face Framing Braids with a Low Bun
This simple style is cute and chic. Two face-framing braids in the front, hair gathered into a low bun at the nape. The front braids add definition along the hairline while the bun keeps everything else tucked and tidy. It’s a balanced, understated look that holds up well over multiple days.

On my fine natural hair this style lasts, which means I’m not redoing my hair every morning. That alone makes it one of my go-to protective styles for longer hair.
Small Braids Dressed Up with Hair Clamps
This style sits somewhere between small and mini braids. Truly mini braids aren’t something I’d attempt on fine natural hair because takedown day would be too much. These small braids add texture and visual interest while letting the length come through. They also get better with time. What you see here was probably day five or so.

Finish the look with hair clamps or another accessory to add even more personality.
Choosing Braids for Summer
Choosing a braided hairstyle for summer doesn’t need to take up a lot of brain power. Summer is the one season that we get to enjoy looking carefree. Now, carefree doesn’t mean messy and unkempt. It just means you have the freedom to not be so polished if you don’t want to be.
Try one of the braided styles I’ve done on my natural hair. They can each be done in a carefree or polished fashion. It’s all in the accessories or the products you use to do the braids.
Note: You may have seen me share some of these hairstyles before, but they are classic and appropriate for so many occasions.
