Hair tools can be downright damaging for those of us with fine natural hair.
There are so many hair tools available on the market that are supposed to make caring for your hair a lot easier. Various types of combs & brushes, bob pins, hair steamers, conditioning caps, flat irons and more.
I remember when I first went natural, I made so many mistakes. By the way, I created a video sharing 5 of those mistakes, one of which was using a hair dryer with the comb attachment. I ripped out so much hair back then, it was frightening. You can check out the video for other natural hair mistakes I made here: https://youtu.be/2vNlSb6LBqs
Anyway, if you find you are struggling to care for your fine natural hair, it could be the hair tools you’re using. Because I wanted to retain more length, I realized that I had to put down many of the hair tools I was accustomed to reaching for when my hair was relaxed and even some that many naturals use now. Tangle teaser anyone? NOT.
Well, in spite of having to give up many of the hair tools that seem to make caring for your hair easier, there’s one particular tool you’ll never have to give up and it’s way more versatile and gentle than what you find in the stores (on the ground and on the web). It detangles, parts, smoothes and combs too. What is that tool?
Your fingers!!
That’s right. Your fingers. Don’t sleep on the ten digits.
It may take a little longer to style or detangle when solely using your fingers but the time is worth it. Your fingers are the only tools you’ll ever own that have your hair’s best interest at heart. That’s because they are the most gentle tools for your hair. That is, as long as you keep your nails groomed and don’t let your fingers become the star in a sequel to Edward Scissor Hands!
Work in sections and you’ll get “good enough” detangling done. Use the pads of your fingers to massage your scalp and stimulate hair growth. Use every-single-finger to pinch and smooth product into your hair and you’ll get greater penetration of said product.
If you haven’t considered using your God given fingers to care for your hair, give it a try. You’ll be surprised at how effective they can be.
