7 Beautiful Braided Hairstyles That Celebrate Length and Texture
Braided hairstyles are just beautiful on natural hair. They bring structure and detail to textured hair, creating visual interest. Whether you wear your braids in a sleek updo or slightly messy, they allow for your hair to look intentional, like you tried, but maybe you didn’t.

The 7 plait styles below are going to give you braid ideas for loose braids or braided ponytail hairstyles that work especially well on long hair. Some are neat, some are a bit messy. Most of all, they are done on natural hair that has no hair added to it. These styles are great for medium-length to long hair.
1. Front Braids with a Low Bun

This braided style combines face-framing braids with a low bun gathered at the nape of the neck. The front braids add definition around the hairline, while the bun keeps the length tucked away. It is understated, balanced, and easy to wear across several days.
When I do this style on my fine natural hair, it lasts, and I don’t have to worry about redoing my hair every day, making this effortless protective style, one of my favorite braided styles for long hair.
2. Boho Braids

I remember when Boho braids got popular on the socials about 5 years ago. They never really go out of style, though.
Most people add hair, but I believe in leaning into the beauty of your own hair. Boho braids appear soft and textured. The hair is braided while intentionally leaving out pieces of hair that are then curled. I use a bit of gel to avoid unnecessary heat, but I know others like to use a small curling iron on the loose pieces.
This style naturally works well to create long length braided hairstyles
3. Crown Braided Updo w/ Side Bun

I created this updo in a way that makes my fine hair appear fuller than it actually is. I used a braiding technique to create visual fullness without adding bulk. The placement of the braid helps fine hair appear more dimensional, and the product I used, added volume to the braid.
This side braided bun introduces asymmetry without feeling too dramatic. The braid guides the eye into a bun placed slightly off center, creating interest while keeping the style contained. It is a subtle variation that works well on medium length to longer length hair.
Here’s a variation of this same bun with curly bangs in the front.

4. Fishtail Braid

This style is one of those braid looks that appears much more difficult to create than it actually is. It just takes a bit of patience. I watched scores of fishtail braid tutorials before I attempted it on my own.
As you braid your hair and it extends, the detail becomes more pronounced, making it especially striking on long hair. What I love about this braided ponytail style is that you can do it in a way that looks polished or messy – Boho-like. The longer the hair, the better.
5. Large Braided Bun

This style begins with braids and finishes in a full bun at the mid-back of the head. The braided base adds structure, while the bun creates a strong, rounded shape. It is a short term protective style and was done on my straightened hair.
If you add hair jewelry, this style looks even more attractive.
6. Looped Braided Bun

This braided ponytail was created by gathering my hair into a low ponytail, splitting the length into two braids, and looping them through the center at the base. The looped detail adds interest while keeping the length visible, making this an easy way to wear braids without fully committing to a traditional ponytail braid.
To make it more protective, you can roll those braids under and pin them up.
7. Mini Small Braids

Some would call these mini braids but they are more small braids. I would never do really mini braids on my fine natural hair because the takedown would be a nightmare.
The small braids add texture and detail while allowing the length to show. This style wears well over a long period of time and looks even better once the braids are lived in. This was probably day 5-ish.
Add visual interest with hair clamps or other accessories.
Closing Thoughts on Doing Braided Hairstyles
I tend to twist my hair more than I plait or braid it, but I love braids because they last much longer. They just take a little bit more time to do. If you are more into braids, hopefully you’ve gotten some braid idea inspiration from the braid styles I shared (again, no added fake or human hair).
