At the beginning of every year, people start setting new year’s resolutions and goals that they want to work on for the upcoming year.

While I’m not a fan of resolutions (because like who sticks to them ever?), I am a big fan of goal setting. That’s because setting goals requires much more than just a desire to do something. It includes mapping out a process to get you where you want to go.

So, in this article let’s talk about personal goal setting for your faith and goal setting for your hair. The two are more connected than you may think but you can also set those goals independent of one another should you so choose. But, let me show you how they can support one another

The Bible tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1). In order to get that “substance,” and that evidence, we need to develop our faith.

The Bible also tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17). So, this very plainly tells us that if we are going to increase or rather, grow in our faith we need to spend time in God’s word.

Jesus said He’s given to every believer a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). That measure may be as small as a mustard seed which is quite capable of moving mountains (Matthew 17:20) but it doesn’t have to be where we end our journey of faith.

Christian goal setting is actually not as difficult as it may seem. To set effective goals, you need to:

  • Determine what the goal is and be specific about it
  • Establish your why: Why do you want to reach this goal?
  • Write it down and keep it before your eyes regularly
  • Break down the steps you need to take to get you to your goal
  • Define how you’ll track your progress
  • Review and make adjustments as needed

One step that I didn’t include that’s typically included in instructions on how to set spiritual goals is setting a deadline.

As long as you are alive you’ll never reach the goal of having enough faith. It’s a lifelong, ongoing process. So, keep at it. These are God sized goals.

Taking the above framework for effective goal setting, let’s map out a plan to spend more time in God’s Word which will lead to your faith growing.

We already know what the goal is – Grow in your Faith

The why could be because you want to walk in the fulness of who God has created you to be.

An example of how you could break this down would be:

As you are reading and studying, take stock of the time you spend.

Do you need to spend more time?

Do you need to switch from general scripture reading to doing a deeper dive into specific biblical topics? Make adjustments as needed.

Lastly, the world’s standard for setting goals is not the same as God’s standard. The difference is God is the one who is in control of the timing and He’s in control of how effectiveness is measured.

I was listening to an episode from the Kingdom Revolution Podcast and it was explained very well. The episode is entitled, “Growth Goals With God: Transforming Your Vision for 2025.” Check out the episode here.

Now, let’s talk about how you can set effective hair goals that will help you to achieve that healthy hair aesthetic. Unlike goal setting for growing in your faith, you can and you should set deadlines for reaching hair goals.

This is because your hair can reach a set goal based on what you want to achieve.  For example, you could have a goal to grow waist-length hair. Once you get to that length, you’ve achieved the goal.

Of course, can then set a new goal to grow past that point but your process of goal setting wouldn’t change.

Here’s an example of what it would look like to set black hair care goals for longer hair:

  • Your why is you want to prove to yourself and others that is indeed possible for more than a select few black women to grow long hair.
  • How much do you want to grow?
  • What’s your target date? Be realistic. Hair grows on average a 1/2 inch per month and there’s some breakage that may occur from normal wear and tear, plus trims. So, perhaps average 3/4 inch of growth every 2 months.
  • Create a hair regimen that balances keeping your hair moisturized and strong. This could include (the steps to get you there):
    • Establishing a set wash day
    • Doing protein treatments every 3 wash days and only deep conditioning on the other days
    • Solely finger detangling with conditioner
    • Protective styling 6/7 days a week
    • Trimming only as needed
    • Making sure you protect your hair with satin or silk when sleeping and when commuting
  • Doing monthly or bi-monthly length checks and writing down your measurements

Are you seeing progress? If not, what changes can you make? Perhaps you just need to tweak something like changing up the type of protective style you are doing (for example: braids may work better than twists because tangling is reduced)

To align goals between your faith and hair for synergy you could integrate intentionality and purpose into both areas. By combining prayer, scripture, and daily confessions into your hair care routine, you would be cultivating patience and trust.

When you set hair goals that reflect your desire to be more confident, you will not be doing it for appearance sake only. Your faith will guide your journey and you’ll begin to view hair care as a way to show gratitude to the Lord as you trust His timing for growth or transformation.

Do you now see how goals for hair care and faith can balance each other?

Tie your hair and faith goals together by tracking them together.
