When it comes to caring for your hair, it’s no different from taking care of the rest of your physical body. It should be a priority, but no more so than caring for your spirit.

You shouldn’t spend all day on your hair. Your hair care routines should be efficient but not overly consuming. Yes, you can have a hair spa day where you indulge in a bit of extra self-care from time to time. Yet, on a regular basis, you need to make just as much time to build up your spirit.

In order to do this, there are other parts of your life that you should optimize for time so that you can spend that time growing in your faith. This includes prayer and Bible study.

Many areas of your life can be optimized to save time and hair care is a big one.

To save time with your hair care routines, key things to focus on are having:

  • Must-have hair products especially for your hair type that make for easy maintenance in a healthy hair routine
  • Tools that make styling your hair fast and Effortless less effortful
  • Go-to hairstyles for busy days

Let’s take a quick look at each of these…

Being a product junky is something that may seem fun in the moment but eventually, all it does is waste money and prevent you from discovering the products that work best for your hair.

When you nail the products that work best for your hair, you’ll be able to easily reach for them to get your hair care done in the shortest amount of time.

Knowing what styling products work best for your hair will help you save time styling as well.

You don’t need many hair tools to style your hair quickly and with less effort. Especially when you have go-to hairstyles (the next point).

I have a small selection of hair tools (all highly rated) that allow me to care for or style my curly hair quickly. It varies based on the type of hairstyle I’m doing but here’s a list of what I use and what I use them for:

  • RevAir Hair Dryer – to dry my hair on wash day and stretch it on days in between
  • Heating cap – for deep conditioning
  • 1.5-inch Flat iron – used in the winter when I want to straighten
  • Tymo Ionic Ring Plus – for when I need a quick touch-up of my straight hair without too much additional heat
  • Curling wand (this is the best one from Hot Tools) – for the rare occasions I want to curl my hair quickly
  • Hair curlers – for soft set, heat-free curls
  • Bobby pins, hair clips & claw clips (all styling accessories)
  • Detangling brush/Wide tooth comb – for wet detangling in the shower with lots of conditioner
  • Rat tail comb – strictly for parting only
  • Scalp Massager – I use this multiple times a week for stimulating my hair follicles
  • If you don’t have a 3-way mirror, you need this one to be able to part the back of your head perfectly!

BONUS: Aside from these, the last thing every lady needs is a pair of hair trimming shears. You need to be able to trim out any knots or tangles that are impossible to remove. This is so you don’t damage your hair in the process of styling or caring for it on wash day.

Each of these tools helps me to style my hair in my go-to hairstyles. Yes, there are other hair tools you can use but these are the essentials.

There are also other hair accessories that you need but these aren’t included in what I call the essential tools. Other hair accessories to have on hand include:

  • satin scrunchies
  • satin scarf or a satin bonnet (optional: use silk if your budget allows for it)
  • sweat-wicking head bands
  • seamless elastics

You’ll save tons of time when you have hairstyles you do on a regular basis. You’ll never have to wonder, “How to do my hair?'”

You also need a go-to style for when you’re having a bad hair day. Then, you need an everyday hairstyle and a party or special occasion hairstyle.

Here are my go-to hairstyles (as of the writing of this post… subject to change as my hair grows longer):

  • Small twists (pinned and styled for different looks)
  • 2 Cornrows or 2 Flat twists (an everyday style)
  • 4 large braids pulled into a bun (another everyday style)
  • Half-up, Half-down (straightened hair – usually a party hairstyle)
  • Side or middle-parted straight hair with the ends curled (special occasions)

These are ways to do your hair that don’t require much effort to upkeep. Yes, it takes time to install twists but once they are in, they last for quite some time.

In addition to having some go-to hairstyles and hair tools, there are some other time-saving solutions for hair care. Some of these can also be paired with faith-based activities like reading the Bible, making biblical confessions, and praying.

Being able to save time on wash day is likely the biggest amount of time you can save.

There are a few ways to do this:

  • Break your wash day steps up over 2 days – this may sound like more time but it’s not. It’s a more strategic way to get things done. For example:
    • pre-pooing your hair overnight
    • detangling your hair while pre-pooing the night before
    • batch prepare any DIY treatments the day before your planned wash
    • air drying overnight
    • saving your styling for the day after washing

Being able to break up these steps over a 2-day period doesn’t necessarily cut down the time it takes to do them. It just cuts down the amount of time you are doing them all at once.

One of the biggest time-sucking opportunities is during your morning hair care routine. Some tips to help you create an effective morning routine for minimalist hair care that saves you time:

  • Decide on your hairstyle the day before. Even better, establish a style you can wear for several days at a time
  • Moisturize your hair at night
  • Pick out any hair accessories the day before when you pick out your outfit
  • If possible, set your hair at night in the style so you don’t have to do much to it in the morning. This works well for these types of hairstyles:
    • Buns
    • Wash and go’s
    • French roll pin-ups
    • Straightened hair with pin curls
    • Braids or twists you don’t intend to take out

Depending on the protective style you are doing, you can use that time to also read your Bible, pray, watch a sermon, or other message of faith.

For example, the time it takes to install small twists can be hours. Why not use that time to sit silently and connect with the Father?

You can also use that time to sit and watch Christian programming or other videos.

If you’re a DIY gal then here’s a very unique way to incorporate your faith into the process:

  • Pray over each ingredient in your mixture – thanking God for the nutrients they provide
  • Pray in the spirit while mixing up your treatments
  • Speak words of faith – confessions over the health of your hair

This isn’t necessarily a timesaver but it is a very practical way to include God in your hair care. Praying while in the shower washing or rinsing your hair is a great way to incorporate God into your hair as well.

As believers we are often faced with mainstream solutions for everyday issues. While they aren’t necessarily bad ideas, how refreshing is it to look at things from a Christian perspective? In this case, tips on hair care for busy Christian women are not something you’ll find all over the web. I hope you’ve found these useful.
