Natural Sunscreens for Hair Protection
Protecting your hair from the sun is almost as important as protecting your skin from the sun. UV Rays can cause damage to your strands and even change your hair’s color to something brassy and unnatural looking. Natural sunscreens for hair are a good alternative to heavy chemical laden products.
Benefits of Natural Sunscreens for Hair
While you may opt to use a chemical based sunscreen on your skin, one of the benefits of using natural sunscreens on your hair is you will lessen your chemical load or exposure.
Another benefit of using natural sunscreen on your hair is it’s much more gentle to your strands than its chemical counterpart. Chemicals can really dry your hair out so using a more natural solution is more gentle.
Natural sunscreens for hair also tends to have other benefits associated with them besides SPF protection. These can include any of these
- Adding moisture to your hair
- Nourishing your strands
- Adding shine
Naturally Derived Oils with Natural SPF Protection
Below you’ll find the SPF of some all natural plant derived ingredients you can use as natural sunscreens for your hair. You can even create your own DIY sunscreens from these:
- Red Raspberry seed oil – SPF of between 28-50 (KING OF NATURAL SPFs)
- Carrot seed oil – SPF of between 38-40
- Avocado oil – SPF of up to 10
- White tea (check out all the benefits of white tea here)
- Coconut oil – SPF of up to 8
- Shea Butter – SPF of up to 6
- Almond oil – SPF of 5
- Olive oil – SPF of up to 8
- Castor oil – SPF of to 6
- Lemongrass essential oil – SPF of 6
Part of the reason the above provide you with some protection from the sun is their natural antioxidant properties.
The natural SPF levels may not be high but when combining the use of one or more of these with wearing hats and protective styling, you can achieve a decent level of protection.
Lastly, I’d be remise in neglecting to highly Aloe Vera as a natural element in fighting damage that may occur from the sun’s UV rays.
Aloe vera does not contain SPF but it can be used to combat any damage done from the sun’s damaging rays. That’s because it’s very moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and contains healing properties.
If you don’t spend many hours outdoors in the sun, a minimal level of protection provided by plant based ingredients is sufficient for your hair.
