Episode Transcription
So, we are about to enter the all-important season of Lent. It’s that time for us Christians when we prepare our hearts and minds leading up to Easter. I will save what you can and can’t eat during Lent for others who are more qualified to explain
I wanted to approach the season of Lent by offering a different perspective. Because on the Faithful Living podcast, we talk about hair care and faith, I wanted to briefly discuss hair envy and how to overcome it as a believer in Jesus Christ.
Envy and jealousy of any kind are obviously not in line with God’s will for your life. The issue is when you are envious of another, you’re essentially saying to God that what He created isn’t good enough.
While it’s okay to work on yourself to be the best version of yourself and to see others as a form of inspiration, you enter a seriously dangerous (to your soul), territory when you start envying what another person has.
The purpose of Lent is to essentially take time out to repent, reflect, and rededicate your heart to Jesus in view of his sacrificial death on the cross. This involves fasting and prayer, but I also submit to you that it also involves putting those things beneath you that do not please God, like envy.
So for this season of Lent, as we are nearing the observed resurrection day of our lord, let us slay the demon of envy,
Here are three ways:
1. Focus on gratitude for what you do have and not on what you don’t. Practically, that can look like thanking God for the hair you have and for the journey you are going through to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.
2. The second thing is to complement others. It’s very difficult for envy to stick when you are being mindful to praise another person’s attributes over your own. It takes the focus off of you and puts it on the other person.
3. The third thing is to pray and focus your mind on God’s word and promises for you.
In Psalm 139:14 it says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. I know that full well.”
Ask the Lord to help you find contentment in your own hair in his unique design for you.
Fill your mind with God’s truth instead of negative thoughts. When you feel envy creeping in, remind yourself of His promises.
A powerful scripture to focus on is in Roman 12:2, which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing, and perfect will for you.”
When you intentionally focus on the truth of God’s word, envy will fade, and you will begin to walk confidently in who He created you to be.
If you’d like a resource that could help you out with this, I created a 30 days to loving your hair, devotional in journal, which I will leave linked in the show notes.
Well, that’s it for this really short episode. I hope you were able to glean some spiritual nuggets from it, and until next time…Stay faithful, stay beautiful, and keep caring for your crown love.
