In the following guest post, you’ll find 5 top tips to ensure that your fine natural hair is properly prepared for a holiday protective style.
It’s finally THE HOLIDAYS. This means you’re likely running around, buying gifts, setting up the decorations, working from home, caring for the family… the list goes on and on!
For fine natural hair, this means its PROTECTIVE STYLE SEASON TIME! Now, we all know that a protective style is meant to cover up those fragile fine strands with hopes that the method will encourage optimal length retention. This is definitely sound advice.
However, there is a missing piece to this healthy fine natural hair puzzle.
Without further ado, below you’ll find the five tips to get your fine natural hair prepared for a holiday protective style:
1) TRIM YOUR ENDS FIRST BEFORE DOING A HOLIDAY PROTECTIVE STYLE
Since you will be tucking away your ends for the next month or so, you really want to make sure that those ends are as clean and even as possible.
Be sure to head to your most trusted stylist (or you can DIY if you’re a pro) for a fresh trim. This will ensure that your ends remain smooth, protected and free from damage. This all while you continue to grow beautiful, strong and healthy hair.
2) DETOX YOUR STRANDS
We go through so much trial and error trying to determine what works best for our fine natural strands. Due to the constant application of hair products/remedies, the best thing to do before installing your holiday protective style is to detox all of those products away from your strands.
Personally, I love to use any of the Soultanicals detoxes on my strands. They tend to be light enough for fine strands yet effective enough to truly penetrate the strands.
3) PROTEIN/MOISTURE BALANCE YOUR FINE HAIR
Before installing your holiday protective style, you really need to ensure that your hair is properly balanced.
Any protein/moisture balance issues must be corrected at once. That’s because leaving the problem as-is, will only lead to breakage.
To properly protein/moisture balance your hair, first determine if your hair is too soft or too hard. If your hair feels mushy, it likely needs a protein treatment. If your hair feels really brittle and hard, it likely needs a moisturizing treatment.
4) MOISTURIZE AND SEAL YOUR FINE HAIR
This is by far the most crucial step. Throughout the duration of your protective style, you will need all of the moisture that you can get. That being said, go ahead and moisturize/seal your fine natural hair. Use the regimen that you know is best for optimal moisture for your head of hair.
5) STRETCH YOUR HAIR BEFORE DOING A HOLIDAY PROTECTIVE STYLE
This step is also extremely important. You’ll need to stretch your fine natural hair. This will help you incur the least amount of damage during the installation process. I personally like to use my RevAir to stretch my fine natural hair. Then, my stylist will not have to comb through any tangles.
Fine natural hair demands treatment like the most delicate of delicate silks. Therefore, it’s best to manipulate your strands yourself before your stylist begins the process of installing your protective style.
