    Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a wonderful natural resource that can help promote healthy hair growth.

When used as a hair mask, it can nourish the scalp, reduce dryness, and soothe an itching scalp. These benefits are due to coconut oil’s nutrients which support natural hair growth. If you are looking for denser hair, coconut oil can work as great hair food over time.

To make your own coconut oil hair mask, try this simple recipe:

    • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
    • 1 tablespoon of honey (optional for extra moisture)
    • 1 to 2 drops of an essential oil (ex: lavender or peppermint to soothe)

Mix it all together and apply to damp freshly washed hair, focusing on the roots and ends. Leave the hair mask on for 20-30 minutes before rinsing it out for softer hair. This hair mask makes for a great pre-poo if you have low-porosity hair.

    Castor Oil

bottle of organic castor oil and a black woman with straightened natural hair beneath words overlayed that say castor oil for hair growth the hair conditioning oil that thickens hair

Castor oil is known for its ability to boost hair growth and increase thickness. However, it’s not a magic bullet. It needs to be used consistently over a long period of time by massaging it into the scalp.

When applied to the scalp, castor oil helps improve blood circulation, stimulating the hair follicles. This in turn encourages natural hair growth.

Castor oil is also great for sealing in moisture at the ends of your hair, preventing split ends. With regular use, castor oil can help you grow thicker, fuller hair.

To see growth and thickness by using castor oil, try this simple routine:

    • Warm up a small amount of castor oil (about 1-2 tablespoons)
    • Massage the oil gently into your scalp for 5-10 minutes to stimulate blood circulation. I like to use this scalp massager to help the oil penetrate my scalp.
    • When doing braids or twists, you can apply castor oil to the ends of your hair to seal in moisture. This has been a game changer for me retaining length when I first started my hair growth journey.

For conditioning, castor oil can be used as a hot oil treatment. Leave the warmed oil on for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for deeper conditioning) before rinsing it out with shampoo.

Once you rinse the oil out, your hair will be well lubricated and it will also feel softer.

Jamaican Black Castor oil is so thick and nourishing that it can cancel out the dryness that leads to hair breakage.

The one issue with JBCO is, some have reported that it causes their scalps to itch. That could be due to it stimulating circulation in the scalp but it could also be causing slight allergic reactions for some. This is why some will use plain castor oil instead.

words fenugreek hair oil benefits and ancient remedy, modern results overlaying picture of fenugreek seeds and oil

Fenugreek oil is made from methi seeds. The seeds, when used to create a hair treatment can strengthen hair and promote natural growth.

Methi seeds are rich in proteins and nicotinic acid, which helps to reduce hair loss while nourishing the scalp. Fenugreek also helps reduce instances of dandruff while soothing an itchy scalp. It’s a great natural remedy for scalp care.

There are two great ways to use fenugreek in your hair. One is as an oil treatment (the most popular way) but also as a hair tea. Here are two easy recipes:

    Fenugreek Oil Treatment:

    • 2 tablespoons of fenugreek oil (you can find these online. Here’s one)
    • 5-6 drops of lavender essential oil (or sweet orange)

Massage the oil into your scalp for 5-10 minutes, leave for 30 minutes, and rinse (optional).

You can also make your own fenugreek oil by lining the bottom of a jar with fenugreek seeds, filling the jar 1/2 way with a light carrier oil (almond, olive, jojoba, avocado, camilia) and letting it sit in the sun for a week. The seeds need that time to “bake” and release their goodness into the oil.

    Fenugreek Tea Recipe:

    • 1-2 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds
    • 1 cup of hot water

Allow the seeds to steep in the hot water for 10 minutes and then use it one of two ways:

    • As a drink for internal benefits that also help with hair health
    • As a final hair rinse after shampooing
